I gotta go out there and try to get in this business. _[laughs] _Before its too late! It wasn't anything special, but I thought it was neat it was a different sound-sort of a power thing. By the time you damp a larger drum, you'll end up with a 20" head anyway. It was unbelievable. And Journey was on tour, so I said Fine, Ill do that. And so I went down and sat with this mastering engineer. Listening to what he was doing, and listening to what we were doingit was like A to Z. I was goin, How are we gonna morph this together and make it work?. I want out. I agree to that, but I don't agree that every time you have a fill, you have to play exactly the same thing that's on the record. That only lasted for six months, because Mayall wanted me to stop playing as much as I was, and become more of a blues drummer. RM: You also did the movie 200 Motels with Ringo and Keith Moon. I did a number of albums for other groups, where I did all the groundwork. It's something I was thinking about, but it is to the point where it sounds like everybody's done it all with what's there. I've been with them for about four years now. You made a couple of solo records after that. And so at that point, I knew I had some chemistry writing with him, even though it was very different from anything Id done before. So its always a fine, artful dance. I didn't know who the hell John Mayall was, so I asked my wife, and she said she thought he was a. country/western singer. Permission was received January, 2001. So I thought about It, you know, and I went back home. RM: In America, a musician usually has to go to New York or LA .to make it. I loved touring. RM: Are there any particular drummers whose solos you like? A lot of them are criticizing you because they are frustrated musicians. We did it in a month, again, with some down time. I was interested in anything I could get ideas from. By that time I was actually playing rudiments better than my teacher, so all he could do was help me read music and understand it. Every night, after every show, I would get everything I needed to hear. The only time in my life I ever did was that time I was forced into it when the rest of the band was at the bar drinking. but you were never a critics band. Pete also has a lot of input when he's playing bass. We argued over every second of it at one point. I think he disliked Bowie so he was giving him a hard time, and me too. But in the extra tagged-on piece, I cut to stage right, facing me walking offstage, over the shoulders of Jon, Neal, Ross and Steve. That was pretty interesting and he was a great help. But in January, Jon told me on the phone, I just wanna know. And I said, Dont call it Journey. instrument. AD: Dixieland, or sometimes more of a swing-type sound. Then shortly thereafter, I called Jon and Neal together. And if I am around people that are messed up, you wont see me there too long, cause it reminds me too much of what I probably looked like. They couldn't see any further than where they were at. And the bigger drum doesn't give you any more sound on stage. Do you find that the smaller drums give more "punch"? Its called a band! I just sort of rid of a lot of demons that were inside of me. Shortly after that, I disbanded Retaliation and formed Blue Whale, but I could never get the same brass section to stay in the band. And it took a few more months, until October, and then I was ready, and found the right doctor for me. And so everybody packed their stuff, went home, and Im hearing that were gonna be off for maybe a couple months, three months, six months, whateverbut it turned out to be close to eight to ten years. But they didnt have any quote hit records, and werent on the radio much. Which singers will do a lotbut I only had to do it once. The way I play is based on feeling-not on something I've been told to do. Slick returned to the band in 1981, after performing guest backing vocals on Modern Times.
